July Course

An Overview

An opportunity to learn to draw and paint using structured, step-by-step methods. Whether you are a novice or have had previous tuition we believe the majority of students want to receive clear, practical instruction.

We teach the visual language of seeing in mass, through light and shade. You will learn the make up of oil paint and how to apply it with different brushes and mediums on different supports.

Week 1: The Foundation Course

An overview of the grammar of drawing and painting.  Drawing from plaster casts, we focus on the basics of proportion, line and volume, and chiaroscuro, completing the course with still-life paintings.
Cost: £350

Week 2: Figure Course

Emphasizing proportion, balance, and gesture is essential to figure drawing.  We teach a centuries old, brilliantly simple way of doing this. You will complete a series of gesture drawings and paintings, grisailles studies as well as completing full colour palette oil paintings.
Cost: £385 (including model costs)

Week 3: Portrait Course

A structured approach to developing a portrait in both charcoal and oils.  You will do a series of exercises to understand the lessons of proportion and setting up poses.  You will complete some charcoal, grisailles and limited colour portraits as well as finishing a full colour palette portrait.
Cost: £385 (including model costs)

Week 4: Landscape Course or Sculpture Course

The landscape course offers an opportunity to explore your plein-aire skills out in the field. You will learn the principles of colour harmony and composition with founder  Ann Witheridge.
Cost: £350
The sculpture course is open to all levels. You will model a portrait in clay with careful attention paid to the anatomical structure of a head.  Founder Scott Pohlschmidt, leads students through the making of an armature and explains the relationship between negative and positive space.
