Who we are

Lavender Hill Studios was founded in 2004, it is the first atelier in the UK and provides rigorous, skills-based training in the craft of drawing and painting. Ann Witheridge, Nick Bashall and Scott Pohlschmidt trained in the foremost ateliers in Europe and have brought their extensive experience together to create a unique methodology for a new generation of figurative artists.

What we teach

The Studios believe that students wish to receive clear, practical instruction in the grammar of drawing and painting as well as the opportunity to develop their own style as artists. The school has forged a distinctive method that combines the classical techniques of the European Masters with the principles of encajar and alla prima painting.

How we teach

In keeping with atelier tradition, teachers work alongside the students and group numbers are kept to maximum of 12. Painting and drawing is done from life in both artificial and naturally lit environments. All our teachers have trained at the Studios and give regular critiques and demonstrations. Importance is attributed as much to the process as to the product.

Why we teach

More than just an arts school, Lavender Hill Studios is home to a community of talented individuals. We are committed to ensuring that the craft of drawing and painting remains central to every artist’s education. The school provides a supportive and joyful learning environment, complimented by a range of extra-curricular activities including, lectures, museum visits and parties.
